N A T U R A L - Dark - Detailed - The image is very close up and very sharp. - Shot in a studio - The background does not look natural, neither does the lighting. It is likely that this image was shot in a studio or indoors with controlled lighting. - Negative? - This image appears as if it could be edited to be negative, as some of the smaller details appear as if their colours are in reverse. - Framing/cropping - The image has a plain background and the subject has been placed in the centre of the photo. It has been framed and taken so that the image is purely focused on the subject. It is cropped in, as there is not really any space between the majority of the subject and the edges of the photo. We cannot even see the subject in full as it is so close up. I believe that Patzsch did this to really allow us to see the smaller details that he has captured, to really go close and to focus on a small part of it's natural beauty greatly, as oppose to viewing the whole plant from afar and not really capturing that same idea that the beauty of the world is in it's smallest details. - Pattern - This photo has quite a lot of re-occurring natural pattern in it, as the branches of the plant continue to reach further and further out and join together to create a rather intricate pattern at the top of the photo. The pattern develops from the roots and continues to grow up until the very top. - Light - This photo has very high contrast and has either very light areas, (the subject), or very dark and saturated areas, (the background). However, there are some mid tones amongst the branches near the top of the photo. - Depth - This image has quite a lot of depth in it, as the foreground, mid ground and background appear to be relatively close, however the image still appears rather 3D as oppose to being flat as the camera looks like it is rather close to the front of the subject. |
M A N M A D E -Light
- Sharp - This image is very angular and symmetrical, it is beautiful and is my favourite photograph by Patzsch. - Shot in artificial light - It appears to me that this image has most likely been shot indoors as it is a staircase, and most likely has some form of artificial lighting inside of the building. This is because the lighting is harsh, white and evenly spread. It is not dispersed like natural lighting. - Framing/cropping - This image has been beautifully framed, it looks so visually perfect and is very aesthetically pleasing as it is so interesting to look at. When I first saw this image I didn't actually realise what it was, until I looked a little deeper. Again, much like the natural photo, it is very cropped in and does not allow the viewer to see the subject as a whole. Parts of the staircase have been cropped out. I believe that this was done so that the viewer could just focus on the centre perfectly, without any other visual distractions. The focus being on the centre of the image almost makes this photo look like an illusion, as if you could just stare into the centre for hours on end and become hypnotized. - Pattern - There is a rather clear and obvious pattern in this photo, a repeating pattern as the staircase continues to spiral down and down. Even though the previous image has a natural subject, there is still a repeating pattern within it. Patterns can be found anywhere all over the world in any form or in any object, I believe that this also may have been another message that Patzsch was trying to convey. - Light - This image is very light and only appears to really have about three shades in it on the surface, however when you look deeper, you will actually find more shades and tones within the crevices of the photo. It appears as if this image may have been lightened or lifted, to really give it that crisp, clean and cinical feel that it portrays. That or either Patzsch took this photo in very bright and artificial lighting. The white within this photo is incredible as it appears to be so pure, and creates great contrast with the shades of grey upon it. - Depth - This image has a lot of depth in it, as the front of the subject is very far from the end of the subject. This creates an almost hole like effect, when we look and this photo it may feel as if we are peering down into a spiralling tunnel or hole, as their is just such a great distance between the camera and the floor. |
